Social Prescribing: empowering you to achieve your goals

Dec 22, 2025

In the latest episode of our popular podcast, The Word on Wellbeing, we heard Dr Miller speak about social prescribing and how it is helping the people of Barnet to improve their wellbeing.

But what is social prescribing?

At its heart, social prescribing is about empowering people to take control of their wellbeing by identifying the non-medical challenges, such as social isolation, stress, and lifestyle factors, that often impact their health.

Social prescribing connects individuals to practical solutions and supportive communities, whether through social activities, mindfulness, therapy, or positive lifestyle changes.

This approach is backed by strong evidence. For example, a study funded by the National Institute for Health and Care Research analysed four million patient records and found that social prescribing interventions were linked to improved health outcomes. Similarly, the UK government-led Green Social Prescribing Programme, which supported 8,000 people, demonstrated significant improvements in mental health.

But Meridian Wellbeing’s role goes far beyond signposting.

We’ve developed a thriving Wellbeing Centre at the Meritage Centre, which continues to grow as a community hub. This centre offers a safe, welcoming space for activities, peer support, and specialist services, which continues to demonstrate our commitment to building and evolving the support we offer to those using our services.

For over a decade, Meridian Wellbeing has also led the Barnet Wellbeing Hub and delivered person-centred, holistic support, which has consistently praised by our commissioners for its successes.

Each year, we provide Emotional Health Checks (EHCs) to at least 1,500 local people and have supported over 15,000 people to date. This is not just about connecting people - it’s about empowering them and creating sustainable wellbeing solutions to change their lives for good.

At Meridian Wellbeing we don’t just deliver a service - we grow with our client-community to create sustainable, positive change.

What happens when I contact the Hub?

When you contact the Hub, you’ll be welcomed by our team of Wellbeing Navigators, experienced specialists who will work with you to identify the challenges causing you distress or discomfort. They’ll help you to navigate the services and activities available to you and, ultimately, support you to achieve your personal wellbeing goals.

The Navigators will guide you through an Emotional Health Check, which is similar to a GP’s physical health check or the MOT your car receives. They will then work with you to develop a customised wellbeing plan tailored to your needs. This is because we believe in a holistic, person-centred approach to our support services.

What social prescribing services can I access through the Hub?

Through the Hub, you can access a wide range of services, including:

  • Talking Therapy - A safe, confidential space to explore what’s going on in your life with a trained therapist such as our Counselling & CBT Service
  • Wellbeing activities - Fun sessions to build confidence, improve fitness, and connect with your community such as our tai chi, aerobics, Pilates, chair yoga and other physical and social activities.
